  • AC Not Cooling

The system runs, but the house never gets cold. This is the single most common HVAC call in a Columbia summer.

  • AC Won't Turn On

Nothing happens when the thermostat calls for cooling - no hum, no fan, no click from the outdoor unit.

  • AC Frozen or Ice on the Line

Visible ice on the copper line, the indoor coil, or the outdoor unit itself. Common in Columbia's humidity once a system is already struggling.

  • AC Making a Strange Noise

The specific sound usually points to the specific part - which is why it's worth describing exactly what you're hearing when you call.

  • AC Leaking Water

Water where it shouldn't be - around the indoor unit, dripping through a ceiling, or pooling in a closet or attic.

  • AC Keeps Tripping the Breaker

The system shuts the whole circuit down, sometimes right at start-up. This is an electrical fault, not something to keep resetting.

  • Urgent

    No Heat

Nothing happens when the thermostat calls for heat, or it runs but never gets warm. Most common on the first genuinely cold night of the year.

  • Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air

Most Midlands homes run heat pumps, so this is the regional equivalent of "no heat" - and it isn't always a fault, which is worth ruling out first.

  • Thermostat Not Working

The thermostat itself is blank, frozen, or simply isn't making the system respond - which can look identical to a much bigger equipment fault from the homeowner's side.

  • Urgent

    AC Smells Like Burning

A genuine electrical or burning smell from an HVAC system is one of the few symptoms on this site worth treating as urgent on its own.

  • HVAC Running Up Your Electric Bill

The system still "works", but the power bill has jumped noticeably - often the earliest and cheapest-to-catch sign that something's wearing out.

  • AC Can't Keep Up With the Heat

The system runs nearly all day during Columbia's peak summer stretch and the house still sits a few degrees above setpoint.

Why Midlands systems fail the way they do

The Midlands runs a long cooling season. Highs sit in the 90s through much of the summer with high humidity, which keeps residential systems under near-continuous load from late spring into September. Winters are mild but bring hard freezes, and most homes here run heat pumps rather than gas furnaces. Sitting inland between the Upstate and the coast, the region gets neither the mountain relief of the former nor the sea breeze of the latter, which is why systems here log more annual run hours than the same equipment would elsewhere in the state.
